Last week, my friend George shared a reflection that has stuck with me. Over the holidays, he found time to rest and relax, which included scrolling through his social media feed. Living on Vancouver Island, an outdoor haven, mountain biking is a popular activity, and George often enjoys watching local downhill biking reels. One video in particular stirred a memory from his youth, an experience that left a lasting impact on him—and one that has some important lessons for all of us on our journeys today.
Years ago, when George was deep into the local mountain biking scene, he was riding a slick downhill trail with friends. As often happens on challenging terrain, he lost control, fell, and found himself on the ground, disoriented and hurt. As he gathered himself, a group of riders came up from behind, checking on him and offering kind words. But one man did something more. He got off his bike, sat down beside George, and offered him this piece of advice that stayed with him:
“I know you’re feeling hurt right now, but the best thing you can do is get back on your bike. The most important thing is to keep your eyes on where you need to go. If you take your eyes off the trail, you’ll start to get distracted. When you’re moving that fast, the only thing you should be focused on is where you’re going.”
This advice wasn’t just about mountain biking; it transcends the sport itself and offers a powerful metaphor for how we move through life and how we interact with the world.

When we face challenges, setbacks, or even falls, it's easy to become consumed by the pain or the obstacles in front of us. But the teaching here is to keep our eyes on the path ahead. It’s not just about overcoming the immediate hurdles, but about staying focused on where we’re headed and why. Just like on the trail, when we get distracted by what’s behind us or what’s off to the side, we lose our way. When we focus on the goal ahead—our vision, our values, and our purpose—we gain the clarity and momentum we need to keep going, no matter how difficult the journey.
This is a lesson for all of us, especially as we enter a new year filled with opportunities, challenges, and resolutions. In everything we do, from our personal goals to the work we’re committed to, the key is to remain focused on where we’re going. The world around us will offer distractions and setbacks, but if we remember to keep our eyes on the prize, we can navigate through with greater resilience, clarity, and purpose.
So, as we move forward into this new year, let’s take this advice to heart. Keep your eyes on where you want to go. Don’t let the falls or distractions stop you. The path ahead is waiting, and the best is yet to come.
