Last week, I received an excited message from Katy Carson, Director of Organizational Relationships at Culturally Committed, urging me to check my calendar and make arrangements to attend this year’s Vancouver Indigenous Fashion Week (VIFW). This annual celebration showcases the creativity and brilliance of over thirty Indigenous fashion designers from across Turtle Island, offering a platform to reveal their latest seasonal inspirations.
This year’s event will feature four themed nights celebrating Indigenous fashion, art, drumming, dance, singing, and more. Attendees can immerse themselves in captivating fashion shows, vibrant pop-up shops, cultural showcases, interactive art installations, and empowering educational workshops.
Katy knows I’ve never attended VIFW before, though she experienced it for the first time last year. When she shared how deeply the event impacted her, I knew right away it would make a perfect feature for Teachings Tuesday. Katy, thank you for your enthusiasm and for sharing your experience with our readers!
"Last year, I had the opportunity to attend Red Dress Night at Vancouver Indigenous Fashion Week. It was a deeply moving experience. The evening beautifully showcased the creativity and artistry of Indigenous designers and models while honoring Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2Spirit. Seeing a sea of red in the crowd—both Indigenous community members and non-Indigenous allies—gathered in solidarity was incredibly powerful and emotional.
One of the most unforgettable moments was when the entire crowd joined together to sing the Women's Warrior Song. Having just learned this song the day before at my Women's Circle, singing it alongside so many others was empowering and a deeply impactful experience I think of often.
This year, I’m thrilled to have tickets to all four nights of Vancouver Indigenous Fashion Week, and I encourage everyone to attend. You might even spot some other familiar faces from Culturally Committed at the events! There’s an amazing lineup that celebrates Indigenous talent, culture, and creativity. If you’re passionate about fashion, community, or simply want to support Indigenous creators, it’s an experience you won’t want to miss.
For more information on the events and tickets, visit the official website: Vancouver Indigenous Fashion Week. There are early bird ticket rates available until October 23 for those who wish to attend!"
